Introduction:
I am submitting this request to clarify judicial details and case associations arising from the conviction of Derek Brown, who was found guilty of multiple offences of human trafficking, sexual assault, and controlling prostitution for gain. Given the public reporting of this case by ITV News UTV on 6 March 2025 (“An absolute joke – Mother bemoans sentence of daughter’s abuser”), it is appropriate to seek official confirmation from NICTS regarding the presiding judge, sentencing details, and any wider investigative links. This request is made solely for factual verification of information already in the public domain and in the public interest, particularly in light of broader safeguarding and trafficking concerns within Northern Ireland
Dear FOI and Communications Teams,
2025-10-02
I am writing to request an internal review of my earlier correspondence concerning judicial assignment and case verification at Craigavon Crown Court in connection with a human trafficking and sexual exploitation trial concluded in early 2025.
It is now a matter of public record, reported by ITV News UTV on 6 March 2025, that Her Honour Judge Donna McColgan KC presided over the Crown Court sentencing of Derek Brown, who was convicted of multiple offences of human trafficking, sexual assault, and controlling prostitution for gain.
The relevant source:
“An absolute joke – Mother bemoans sentence of daughter’s abuser,” ITV News UTV, 6 March 2025
Given that this information has already been placed in the public domain by a recognised national broadcaster, I request that NICTS confirm, in anonymised form where necessary:
- That Her Honour Judge Donna McColgan KC was the presiding judge in R v Derek Brown (Craigavon Crown Court, 2025) and provided full case certification.
- That sentencing took place at Craigavon Crown Court on or about 6 March 2025.
- That the charges included human trafficking and sexual assault offences under the Human Trafficking and Exploitation (Criminal Justice and Support for Victims) Act (NI) 2015 and related legislation.
- The total custodial term was 72 months (3 years custody + 3 years licence).
- Confirm if this involves a bigger investigation in regard to the missing 430,000 young women including my daughter who are all still missing according to government figures.
- Are we to believe Dereck did this trafficking on his own?
- Many of the 2025 PSNI investigations involve older individuals, Building-society incident (Newry, 27 Sep 2025): suspects are 68M, 69F, 42M; flagged via the Banking Protocol; later further arrested on suspicion of kidnapping, human trafficking, and fraud by false representation; later released while enquiries continue. Police Service of Northern Ireland strongly suggesting that these offences have been ongoing for years, if not decades, beneath the radar or under the protection of institutional silence. There seems only be an an interest in financial implications.
This request does not seek any personal or identifying victim information, only factual confirmation of judicial assignment and sentencing details already cited publicly by ITV News.
Under Section 45 of the Freedom of Information Act 2000, I ask that this internal review be conducted within 20 working days.
If NICTS considers any portion exempt under Section 32 (court records) or Section 31 (law enforcement), please provide a partial disclosure and a clear justification for any redactions or refusal.
Thank you for your attention to this matter.
Yours sincerely,,
Martin Newbold
